Helmet assembly and its pitfalls

The installation of Scurion® lamps on personal helmets regularly raises safety-related questions:

We have now had many years of experience since 2001 and have noticed that sports helmets (most of which were not designed for applications such as caving) tend to be lighter. Although less weight on the head is pleasant, it does not make it any easier to find a suitable helmet. Often the shell of the helmet is almost too thin to screw anything solid on and instead of a strap with air as a "crumple zone", this is partially or completely replaced with foam, which sometimes makes it impossible to mount a lamp.

It is therefore important to choose a robust, simple helmet. In addition, the user has to modify his helmet himself (drill or burn holes). Even if this interference with the integrity of the helmet is minimal and there are even other ready-made helmets with lights on the market, this will invalidate the manufacturer's warranty. If you cannot take this risk, you must choose a variant without modifying the helmet. This is possible, for example, with a headband on the helmet. In practice, however, it is obvious that a lamp that is not fixed to the helmet will not last long, e.g. in a cave.

We are of the opinion that the professional intervention in the integrity of a robustly built helmet (drilling, burning, gluing) represents an acceptable risk. The gain in safety: good and robust lighting compensates for this in the long term.

Those who cannot bear the risk themselves should look for another hobby. Mini golf, for example, which also involves many holes ;-)

As a warning, the following picture. In this specific case (2016), the low material thickness, the age of the helmet (first used in 2006 = clearly at the end of the service life specified by the manufacturer / material fatigue) and also a large temperature difference (25-30°C) on the first day of use played a role!
